Detachment

This particular phenomena has unfortunately always had a hold on me. As a child of trauma, it is common to become detached from your surroundings and emotions as a flight response when situations become too overwhelming. Of all of the experiences in my life, detachment is easily one of the most frustrating to deal with because of the lack of connection to everything.

If you've never experienced it, let me explain what it's like to live with it. It can be different for everyone, but for me I like to describe it as feeling like I'm not in my body. I can see, hear, smell, taste, and feel. Yet, it doesn't feel like me that is experiencing all of these sensations. The brain has literally pulled out of connection with the body and it feels more like autopilot than actual living. It's like being inside of a vessel with no control over what is happening next. You just kind of go along for the ride and there isn't much thinking or feeling.

This happens to me more than I would like to admit, but there isn't much I can do to help "bring me back to earth".

Detachment can cause a number of complications for yourself and others. It can lead to a lack of passion or compassion, a lack of involvement or spark of joy. Relationships can become strained, and others may view you as insensitive. When you are on autopilot, sometimes you say what the inner you feels, instead of carefully considering how it would make others feel. This doesn't make you a bad person. It's just what your body does for survival in the moment. It is very important to seek professional help if your detachment is an ongoing nuisance. However if you only have occasional detachment, you can help yourself with a few simple exercises for your chakras and soul.

Trauma response is one reason humans become detached. However, often detachment can stem from not being spiritually aligned. Part of trauma is being thrown off which messes with the balance of your chakras and energies. If these are over or under active, it can cause that feeling of not being present.

As I've stated in previous posts, it is so important to ground your energy and connect yourself to your surroundings. One of the best ways to ground yourself is to do something that brings you in the present moment. Like meditation, or tasks that continuously remind you that you are here and now.

A healthy root chakra can start the healing of detachment by centering yourself and tethering your soul to the earth. This is located in the pubic region of the body and is associated with the color red. When you think of the color red, what do you picture? Passion, energy, romance, intensity. All very energetic emotions that drive the life force. If you take just 10 minutes out of your day to sit or lie down and focus your energies into your root chakra, you will start to see improvement in feeling like you are in the present.

Here is a simple meditation you can do to help you ground your root chakra to bring you back from the unknown:

Begin your meditation in comfort. Make sure you will be free from distraction. You may sit in a chair, or lie down on your back. It is extra helpful to be outside while you do this, but it can be done anywhere.

If any thoughts enter your head, acknowledge them for just a moment and then let them pass by.

Focus your attention on your breathing. Take a few deep breaths in through the nose. Then release them slowly and controlled through the mouth. Repeat up to five times.

If you are outside in the sunshine, picture it as cleansing your body with love and light. Washing away any pain, worry, stress, or negative vibrations. If you are inside, you can picture a bright white light bathing you just as the sun would.

After you've carefully light bathed yourself on every inch of your body, start to focus on your root chakra located in the pubic region. Picture a small red energy in this area. As you focus upon it, make it turn as the earth does. It will become smoother and start to grow bigger and brighter. Picture this energy as passion.

As this passion energy grows and continues to turn, picture it connecting with the earths energy and becoming one steady flow of temperance and connection. You are the earth, and the earth is you. You can even repeat this as a mantra to bring you closer to the moment. "I am the earth and the earth is me."

When you've felt you've truly connected, you may slowly come out of the meditation. Take a moment to notice the sights, smells, tastes, and things you feel around you. You are here. You are now. You are powerful and connected.

I hope this helps those of you who could use a bit more help with feeling grounded. Please feel free to message me with any questions or other help for grounding your energies.

Love and Light,
