Spirituality vs. Religion

Updated: Sep 6, 2020

This is a topic that can get quite heated as religion is held very sacred to those who practice.

However, I am not here to tear down others belief systems, or praise one option over the other. I'm simply writing to note the key differences so that you can decide what works best for you, or help identify what your spiritual needs are.

The most common religion throughout the world is Christianity, followed by Islam, and Hinduism. Of course there are many others but these are the top three worldwide. One of the best things you can do for yourself to gain an understanding of others belief systems or even find similarities, is to study religions that you have not previously found knowledge in.

I recommend this only because it helps you become more worldly and knowledgeable. It helps to find a deeper reason for the need for religion, and it helps to gain respect and interest in other cultures. It is important to feel more connected to the cultures that differ from us because it increases our empathy, and humbles us from a superior complex; which as you know from my last post, is how the ego grows.

So what is spirituality then? How does it differ from religion, and why might this be a better option for some?

The main similarity of all religions, is the worship of a higher power. Spirituality is no different, however; this higher power is more anonymous. It is the connection to everything, everywhere, in every dimension, time, place, and distance. Most, if not all religions worship a God/Goddess, or multiple Gods/Goddess'. In spirituality, we don't necessarily "worship", but we do connect. Connecting is being mindful of the energies outside of ourselves.

If you are able to accomplish true connection you can actually develop what humans call- psychic abilities! Yes, everyone has this ability, it is just deeply buried in most humans because they are focused on...well...being a human. When you end up awakening, or remembering yourself as a soul instead of a vessel, your universal knowledge increases and you suddenly remember your purpose. For me, I had always been afraid to die until I awakened. Suddenly, I wasn't scared anymore. I understood that I have my purpose here, and that the energies around me were connected.

Not only is this one of the benefits of spirituality, but there is a sense of peace and tranquility gifted to us when we practice meditation; which is the easiest fastest way to feel connected. Other religions also practice meditation for the same reason as spirituality. To be closer to the source, or God as most cultures call it. I find that most humans aren't ready to accept a higher power as just energy. Hence the reason we as humans have created "God" as a human, or animal, or other deity. It gives us something to connect to visually, as it can be hard to comprehend "nothingness" which is actually everything.

Have I lost you yet? I know, it's a lot to take in. I've tried to explain it the best I can to my best friend, and my husband but it's truly not something you can explain. You have to feel it, and know it at your core, which only happens once you've awakened.

Spirituality isn't just for the "awakened" though. It's for everyone. The need to become closer to the reason you are here. There are no expectations, no books, or bibles, no specific day or direction to worship. It is just being aware that we are only a small piece of the puzzle and discovering our purpose.

It is about discovering the peace, warmth and love inside yourself and giving back to the universe. Kind of like the golden rule "treat others how you want to be treated". More so, becoming the best version of yourself. Your higher self. Since I've been practicing mindfulness and meditation, I've noticed a huge difference in the way I view everyday things. I've also noticed that I have become less agitated, less worried, and less careless.

The reason I personally never felt right in a religious setting was because of the "rules" or "sins". The shaming and fear programmed into most religions. I can tell you that after I awakened I understood how "heaven" and "hell" worked. I understood "good" and "bad". I use quotations there because it's not as black and white as everyone makes it out to be.

There are tiers of spiritual growth, and depending on how you've grown in the life you just came from after death; is where you end up on the tiers of growth, or dimensions as most spiritualists and awakened people will call it. Then from there you are reassigned to continue your soul growth, or you stay in that dimension until you are ready to proceed. I'll talk more about all this stuff on another post, it actually has a lot to do with spirit (ghosts) and "demonic energies" (lower vibrationals), or "angels" (higher vibrationals).

I try to refrain from using words that sound foreign or cliche' when it comes to explaining these things because I don't want it to sound cheapened. I become so passionate talking about all of this because of how beautiful and amazing it is. I truly wish I could just share the knowledge I have with everyone, but that is part of your spiritual journey and I can't skip chapters for you.

So, if I haven't scared you off with my mumbo jumbo about entities and the like, I would love to educate you more if I've got your interest peaked. If religion has always been too much for you as it was for me, there are alternatives to feel connected to something outside of yourself. Spirituality is such a great option as it is based on becoming the best version of yourself.
